Email vs. face time

“Did you get my email? I sent it 10 minutes ago, what do you mean you haven’t read it? I wrote the last sentence in bold. That’s how you know it was important. OK, read it and call me back.”

Sound familiar? It might if you’re like me and use email for most communication. In today’s business world whipping off an email or sending a quick text is easy and fast. However, for all of the benefits of technology, sometimes what you really need is an old fashioned phone call or face-to-face meeting.

Don’t get me wrong, I use the exclamation point in an email now and again for emphasis. But there is no substitute for face time with a client or vendor. Human interaction never gets lost in spam filters or firewalls, and it is never returned because the attachment was too big.

Every now and then I sense that I’m isolated in my office acting like one of Ted Williams’ “Knights of the Keyboard.” That’s how Teddy Ballgame described the writers who critiqued the game from the lofty press box without visiting the field to talk to the players.

When I’m feeling this way I hit the bricks, walk around, and make the human connection with everyone on site. I also try to have a sit down with my clients once a week, just to get a read on what’s going on in their world and how I can help.
