The holidays are a time for giving, and a time to gather with family, create memories and eat until we can’t eat anymore. Unfortunately for far too many children here in Greater Boston and across the country, they may not be as lucky. In fact, across the country 1 in 6 children are at risk of hunger. This is a shocking reality, but despite the US being first in the world in GDP, we are second in childhood poverty among developed nations. We have a responsibility to do better for these children, and we at JLL are pleased to introduce a program that aims to do just that.
In partnership with the amazing team at ezCater, we have launched a charitable program called CaterCares, which allows tenants in JLL-managed properties to order meals for meetings and events and earn rewards points that translate directly into meals for hungry children. This free programs combines the power of JLL’s Property Management group, which manages 167 million square feet of US office space, with the reach of ezCater’s online ordering platform, which connects businesspeople nationwide with more than 45,000 restaurants and caterers, to make a real and measurable difference in our community.
We’ve been thrilled with the response we’ve received thus far. With support from owner Morgan Stanley, we have launched the program at 1 Post Office Square and Rowes Wharf in Boston. We are beginning to roll the program out throughout the rest of New England and plan to expand nationwide to the more than 800 office buildings JLL manages throughout the United States in 2017. Impressively, in just a few short weeks in these two buildings the program already generated enough money to create 1,800 meals for hungry children!
I might be biased, but it’s hard to find any reason why a company wouldn’t want to participate in CaterCares. The program follows, what I like to call, a model of collateral kindness, where doing good becomes a byproduct of something we’re already doing anyway. Companies spend $21 billion on corporate catering each year. If they continue to do that, and we capture even a fraction of that spend, just think of the impact we can have! Here in Boston, we have been lucky enough to partner with The Greater Boston Food Bank, who does incredible things for our community. With their significant purchasing power, every $1 we donate to them can provide 3 meals for hungry children, so the potential impact of our contribution is truly enormous.
It’s been absolutely remarkable to see CaterCares blossom from an idea into a reality and quite rewarding too. As a global company, we at JLL have a tremendous opportunity to leverage our scale for good, and I am thrilled that we are doing just that.
